$1.1 Million Settlement in Medical Malpractice Case for Woman Who Suffered Sepsis Following Bariatric Surgery
The Baer Law Firm agreed to a $1,100,000 settlement on behalf of a mother of four who went into septic shock following bariatric (weight loss) surgery. Sepsis was caused by a mistake made by the anesthesia team. The anesthetist failed to fully remove the temperature probe used to monitor the woman’s body temperature during surgery. The surgeon unknowingly stapled over the probe while closing her stomach. This caused a leak at the site where the probe was stapled into the stomach lining. The leak of digestive material into the body cavity resulted in an infection that sent the woman into septic shock. She was in the ICU for months and had a complicated recovery after she was discharged from the hospital. Fortunately, she is doing much better. She married and she and her new husband launched their own business which is thriving!
